Tuesday was our first full day at the Fair.

We met at Janet's house for breakfast. After breakfast, Mary Kay entertained us with an overview of the six chapters of the book she wrote, Our State Fair.  Then we were ready for the fair.

Since the fairgrounds approximate 460 acres, Jay decided to rent a scooter. You wouldn't believe all the booths for deep-fried foods, or food on a stick, including corn dogs, deep-fried vegetables on a stick, or deep-fried Twinkies!!

In the Agriculture Buiding, in addition to cute t-shirts, we saw grapes and baskets and trays of apples already judged, and of course THE BUTTER COW. Ed and I were standing in front of it to have our picture taken, and a reporter from Iowa Public Radio asked for our names (We appear at roughly 2:17 in this video).  Of course I mentioned to the reporter that Mary Kay had written the definitive book on the fair, so she was interviewed for IPR.

And then it was on to see the cattle judging in the Pavillion, and the Big Boar and Super Bull, all 3032 pounds of Squirt, this year's winner.  When we got to his pen, he was lying down, so the picture you see is thanks to Ken.  After watching the horses practice for the next day's judging (including the cute pony you see here) and after walking by these HUGE tractors, we went to the prepared food judging, our final event for the day.

We started our progressive dinner at Dee's house. Since everyone who lives near the fair has parking available, Dee thought to meet us with her own sign which said "Park here $5."  She erven had blue ribbons on all of the hor d'oeuvres she served. Our next course was at Jeanne's house - salad.  The main meal was at Mary Kay's.  But by then it was getting dark, so not many pictures!  The dinner ended at Carney's house, where we played Iowa charades before our dessert (Blueberry Hill pie a la mode and/or rhubarb sauce) and coffee. Ther last picture is Janet showing us her artistic talents by coloring the wall of Carney's bathroom (we were all invited to do the same).

And that was our first full day at the fair!
